Boxing - Get fit with every punch

To box like the Ukrainian professional boxer? A demanding objective and difficult to attain. With the right boxing equipment by SportSpar you take big step closer to that – that’s for sure!

Boxing is more than just a martial art

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people fight in a sportive manner, only using their fists. What sounds simple in the beginning, is actually a quite complex martial art, hard work and an iconic sport – not only thanks to impressive heavyweight boxers like Wladimir Klitschko. Boxing is fascinating, it thrills the masses for centuries. And the boxers themselves love to duel using their enormous physical and mental strength. It’s no wonder that you are tempted by this special adrenaline rush, too, and you want to enter the ring as a hobby or with (more) professional ambitions à la Wladimir Klitschko. Get the right equipment and clench your fists to knock out your punching bag and later your human opponents. Essential equipment offered by SportSpar:

  • boxing gloves
  • head protection
  • mouthguard
  • maybe a complete kit including a punching bag
  • training gear
  • special training equipment (handgrips, skipping ropes etc.)

Note: Depending on you being or becoming an amateur or a professional boxer, you should go for the adequate equipment. Professional boxers only need wraps and gloves for their individual equipment. In contrast, amateur boxers additionally need a head protection, a mouthguard as well as a jockstrap (for men) and a chest protector (for women). Pay attention to high-quality products – especially if you really want to match Wladimir Klitschko and even think about participating in contests.

First-class boxing gloves are the most important thing

There’s no doubt: The most important equipment for a boxer is his glove. Usually, the gloves are made of genuine leather or synthetic leather. They look like mittens. Another important feature of a boxing glove is its soft padding which minimises your own risk of injury as well as the risk to severely hurt your opponent. By the way, the level of padding defines the which kind of boxing glove you should use. The weight is given in ounces (oz). Depending on its use, a boxing glove weighs between 6 to 18 oz:

  • 6 - 8 oz = boxing gloves for kids
  • 10 - 12 oz (with laces) = boxing gloves for professional matches
  • 8 - 18 oz = boxing gloves for sparring and other training (filled with shock absorbing materials to avoid injuries; it's all about improving the boxer's skills and not about winning or losing in the sense of a competition)
  • 16 - 18 oz = extra soft gloves

Mostly, the thumbs are fixed to avoid injuries. Furthermore, most of the glove is closed. Some of the gloves are only padded on the palm of the hand and not on the fingers – they can move freely. These gloves are used for combat sports like mixed martial arts (MMA). SportSpar offers closed and open-fingered boxing gloves for men, women and kids. You’ll find the gloves in various sizes or rather ounces.

Note: When boxing you should wear wraps or padded inner gloves underneath your boxing gloves.

Protect your head and your teeth!

Apart from good boxing gloves, you should also think about a protection for head and teeth. A mouthguard is just a piece of plastic which covers your teeth, your gums and parts of your jaw bone. Don’t be surprised by the fact that mouthguards are only available in one size. That’s normal. Custom-made mouthguards are only available at specialists (dentists or dental technicians) – a quite expensive affair.

Tip: You can adjust some of the mouthguards by warming them up in hot water.

The protection for your head offers a soft padding. It protects you from hard knocks and falls in the ring. And don’t forget the jockstrap and the chest protection – depending on whether you are a man or a woman.
